Why Devon Aoki Ended Her Acting Career

Posted by Mittie Cheatwood on Friday, June 21, 2024

With an amazing net worth of $30 million, model and actress Devon Aoki might not be a name that people hear too much now. There are many stars who say that they're going to leave Hollywood behind, and Hilary Swank even stopped acting for a time.

While Devon Aoki became a memorable name for her acting roles, she actually quit acting, too. Let's take a look at why Devon decided to step away from the acting world.

Time To Stop

Some celebrities leave acting behind without telling anyone or making any big, public, official announcements, and that seems to be what happened with Devon Aoki.

Devon stopped acting in 2009 as she wanted to devote her time to her family. According to Celebrity Net Worth, she and James Bailey got married in 2011 and the couple has four children: three daughters and one son.

Being part of Hollywood can be stressful and demanding, as actors have to juggle busy schedules and family time, along with comments that the press makes about their appearance and how they're choosing to live their lives. It makes sense that some people enjoy the craft of acting but then want to do something else with their time.

Devon is now 38 years old and fans can follow along with her on Instagram as she posts photos of her beautiful children. In February 2020, she and her husband celebrated ten years of marriage and she shared a photo of them to mark the exciting day.

Acting And Modeling

Devon was not only an actress but a model, too. According to Celebrity Net Worth, she went to London's American School when she was younger and began modeling when she was only 13 years old.

She first walked down the runway back in 1997 and was the face of Versace at 16 years old.

Devon has worked for many high-profile brands: Chanel, L'Oreal, Hugo Boss, Yves Saint Laurent, and Lancome are among a few. She has done both print ads and walked in runway fashion shows.

After appearing as Suki in the 2003 movie 2 Fast 2 Furious, Devon became very well-known. In 2004, she starred in D.E.B.S. and then Sin City in 2005. She doesn't have too many movie credits since she did stop acting in 2009.

It's amazing to think about how successful Devon was, especially as a model. Many praise her sense of style in the '90s and 2000s and according to Vogue.com.au, she definitely started at a young age.

Devon explained, “My breakout modeling job was with Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel in 1998. They were about to send me away (I’d shown up with my school backpack), but he saw something in me that others didn’t. I am forever grateful to him.” Devon also talked about her beginnings in the industry: "I was scouted at a Rancid concert in New York [in 1995], and ended up shooting a story for Interview magazine in exchange for backstage passes."

While Devon achieved much success as a model and then left acting behind, fans loved watching Devon play Suki in 2 Fast 2 Furious. The movie received a 50 percent Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and many consider it to be an entertaining film.

Entertainment Weekly called it a "the forgotten Fast And Furious gem" and a fan started a Reddit thread called "I really want Devon Aoki back." Another fan replied, "I’d love to have her back. Who knows, maybe with this new female spin-off movie, she can be included." There has been talk that the franchise will release a female spin-off, and it would definitely be great to see Devon come back, although if she hasn't acted in years and stopped in 2009, that might not happen.

Devon is still involved with modeling in some way. According to Dazed, she celebrated Jeremy Scott's 20th anniversary by walking the runway.

The publication calls her a "cult model" and mentioned that when she appeared in 2 Fast 2 Furious, her character would wear amazing outfits that looked just like her cars.

It definitely sounds like Devon made a huge impact in the modeling world. In an interview with Vogue, designer Jeremy Scott and model Karen Elson talked about how they met each other, and Devon had something to do with it. Jeremy explained, "We met at Café Ruc in Paris in October 1999 when I was having dinner with [American model] Devon Aoki, who had just told me she wouldn’t be able to walk my show. Karen came up to the table because she knew Devon, and said, 'I'll do it!' She stole the spotlight and it helped put me on the map. Since then, she’s been a true friend I can rely on."
