These days, Johnny Depp is in a better place, although moving on from his recent troubles has been easier said than done. Sure, the embattled actor has made significant strides lately as he looks to restart his career. So far, he’s managed to make several films. He’s also continued his partnership with Dior, and he’s been busy with his music.

Just as Depp is set for a comeback though, people also can’t help but notice that his films have been disappearing on Netflix lately. And interestingly, it’s not for the reason that some may think.

The Amber Heard Drama Wasn't Good For Johnny Depp's Career

Back in 2015, things were looking up for Depp. That year, he tied the knot with Heard after the two met while filming The Rum Diary several years back. The actors also had two big films about to come out then: his latest Pirates of the Caribbean installment and the Harry Potter prequel, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which would become a box office hit.

Indeed, 2015 was a good year for Depp. But little did he know that the following year, everything was going to start to change. By 2016, Depp’s marriage to Heard was already headed for divorce.

Even worse for the actor, Heard also started making serious public accusations against Depp, claiming that he had been physically abusive during their marriage.

In the years that followed, the public drama with Heard led to the eventual cancelation of Depp from Hollywood. Just like that, the actor was fired from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Not long after, it was also confirmed that Depp would be replaced by Mads Mikkelsen in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. At the same time, the actor also found himself unable to secure roles (except for a few projects that were filmed outside the U.S.).

And just when it seemed that it was all over Depp, however, the actor managed to win against his ex-wife in court. Many believe this is exactly the vindication that Depp needed to restart his Hollywood career again.

Why Did Netflix Remove Johnny Depp's Movies?

Amid everything that was going on with Depp, fans couldn’t help but notice that the actor’s movies were leaving Netflix too. These include his Pirate of the Caribbean movies and even his well-loved animated film, Rango.

And while some may have speculated that this had something to do with Depp’s public controversy with Heard, it turns out that this wasn’t the case. Rather, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies had to leave the streamer as the franchise is owned by Disney.

In fact, since then, the films have been available to stream on Disney+. As for Depp’s Rango, which is distributed by Paramount Pictures, the film is available to stream on Paramount+.

In case anyone is wondering, there are still a couple of Depp’s films that are also available on Netflix. These include the '90s crime drama Donnie Brasco, which also stars Al Pacino and the late Anne Heche as well as the psychological thriller Secret Window, which also stars Maria Bello and John Turturro.

Is Johnny Depp Still Acting Today?

Determined to move on from his recent turbulent years, Depp has also made it clear that he has no plans to leave the movie business just yet. Most recently, the actor stars in the French period film Jeanne du Barry, which sees Depp portray King Louis XV.

The movie tells the story of du Barry (played by the film’s director and co-writer, Maïwenn) and her journey toward becoming King Louis XV’s last official court mistress.

Now, Depp may have played all kinds of roles throughout his career, but this marks the first time that the actor has ever portrayed royalty onscreen. For the actor, it was just a matter of finding some common ground with the late king.

While speaking with Vogue France, Depp explained that he thought a lot about how they are both public figures who can never get a chance to step out in public without being recognized.

The actor also remarked that “the idea of anonymity for me pretty much died a long time ago” and that King Louis XV pretty much dealt with the same “problem.”

Jeanne du Barry eventually premiered at Cannes where it received a seven-minute standing ovation. Following its critical success, the film has already secured a U.S. distributor. Meanwhile, Netflix has also become involved in Depp’s latest movie, securing its second window rights but in France only.

Aside from Jeanne du Barry, Depp has also continued to work on his animated Puffins series. Its latest installment, Johnny Puff: Secret Mission, is scheduled for release in November 2023. In addition, the actor is also hard at work on the biopic Modi, which Depp is directing.

It’s unclear if Depp will have another onscreen project soon, but it is worth noting that the actor just signed a new deal with Dior. That means fans can expect to see Depp star in various campaigns for the French luxury fashion house once again.
