It’s been over a year since Jennette McCurdy, known for her starring role in the hit Nickelodeon sitcom, iCarly, broke the internet with her provocatively-titled memoir, ‘I’m Glad My Mom Died.’ The memoir, which ascended to the New York Times bestseller list almost overnight, details McCurdy’s tumultuous relationship with her mom, Debra McCurdy, unflinchingly describing a pattern of emotional abuse that persisted for years.
Even murkier is the Sam & Cat star’s relationship with her father, who, despite witnessing her mother’s abuse first-hand, couldn’t be bothered to intervene. With details of the deeply complex and disturbing family dynamics now in the public domain, fans can’t help but wonder: Did Jennette McCurdy share a meaningful bond with her father before her mother's tragic passing?
Did Jennette McCurdy And Her Dad Have A Relationship Before Her Mom Died?
For a time, Nickelodeon star Jennette McCurdy seemed to be living the dream. At just 15, the now 31-year-old had already clinched a pivotal role in Nickelodeon's widely acclaimed sitcom, iCarly, starring alongside teen sensation Miranda Cosgrove.
What's more, after iCarly concluded its final chapter in 2012, McCurdy found herself headlining her very own spinoff series, Sam & Cat, alongside chart-topping sensation Ariana Grande. However, beneath this glittering façade, Jennette was battling some pretty daunting emotional issues, triggered by her turbulent and abusive relationship with her mom, Debra McCurdy.

Determined to live out her dreams of stardom through McCurdy, Debra controlled every aspect of the teen star’s life, including her love life, eating habits, and grooming routine. But the complex family dynamics didn’t end there.
Though her fraught relationship with her mom takes centerstage, Jennette’s memoir also delves into her equally dysfunctional relationship with her dad, who, though not outrightly abusive, comes off aloof and withholding.
In a later interview with BuzzFeed News, McCurdy delved deeper into her relationship with her dad, shedding some light on why, despite witnessing her mother’s abuse first-hand, her father never bothered to intervene.
“I get how complicated [my father’s] role in that family was,” she explained to BuzzFeed. “My mom had this long affair, had these three other children that weren’t his, and I imagine the timing of her cancer played a factor in his sticking around. But, as much as I try to see it from the point of view of the various adults that were in the household, I just don’t have much respect for their approach.”

All things considered, it’s really no wonder the Nickelodeon alum opted to give her memoir such a provocative title. “It’s something I mean sincerely,” she told BuzzFeed News of the title. “I’m genuinely glad. If she were alive, I’d still be trapped. Every important decision in my life wouldn’t have been possible.”
Jennette McCurdy Uncovered Shocking Secrets About Her Dad
Nearly two years following her mother’s tragic passing, Jennette McCurdy had to confront some unsettling truths about her childhood. During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, the iCarly star recounted a profoundly poignant conversation with her father, in which she discovered that she was, in fact, not his biological daughter.

“I remember feeling like I got the wind knocked out of me. My mouth was really dry,” she recalled. “I felt that he’d always been pretty disengaged and disconnected. So, it was shocking, but I also started to find excuses for him in that information. Oh, that’s why he was so absent all those years."
However, it wasn’t just the shocking revelation that McCurdy found difficult to process. “He said, “It’s not your fault you were born.’ Then he repeated it, he doubled down and then tripled down," she recalled. "I thought, ‘This is the weirdest thing to say to somebody after you’ve just told them you’re not their biological father.'”
Regrettably, the poignant conversation did little to mend the already faltering bond between McCurdy and her father. “That was a relationship that I kind of let dissolve, let disintegrate. There wasn’t really much there to begin with,” she admitted to Barrymore.

“Initially, I felt a lot of guilt, and tried to really work on that relationship, and see him and his then I guess maybe she became his wife shortly after that. I tried to see them quite often, and then it just didn’t feel right in my bones. I just felt like… there’s no real connection here, it just doesn’t feel right in my bones.”
Does Jennette McCurdy Have A Relationship With Her Biological Dad?
While enlightening, Mark McCurdy’s revelation also unearthed a plethora of unanswered questions for Jennette. Desperate for answers, the Sam & Cat star embarked on a quest to locate her biological father.
Following some astute sleuthing, the Nickelodeon star uncovered that Andrew, the man with whom Debra had maintained an affair for most of her marriage, was a trombone player, and was scheduled to perform a concert at a hotel in Newport Beach.

Accompanied by iCarly co-star Miranda Cosgrove, Jennette set out for Newport Beach, where she finally confronted her biological father about her dysfunctional childhood. “I went to meet him, and we had a really great kind of first conversation,” she later revealed to Drew Barrymore, “Then we saw each other for maybe three to four months, once a week probably for that amount of time.”
After months of back-and-forth communication, Jennette was even looking to introduce Andrew to her brothers. “My brothers, I have three older brothers, two of them are biological brothers, and they hadn’t met him, and I was sort of doing the thing of trying to get them to meet him,” she told Drew Barrymore, “and thinking like this could be good, this could be healing for all of us.”
Sadly, it didn’t take long for this particular paternal bond to disintegrate as well. “It got to a place where that one felt a little strange also,” Jennette explained to Drew Barrymore.
